The secret motif running through Dark Side of the Moon
There's a 2 chord vamp that runs through Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It's one of the many things that connects the different songs of the album. I want to talk about it because it might be interesting to you too.
In Speak to me (Breathe), the verse loops through these 2 chords in the key of Em.
(Em)Breathe, breathe in the (A7)air
(Em)Don't be afraid to (A7) care
At the end of Time, the next track, it goes back to the exact same verse and chorus with different lyrics, recalling the exact same progression.
(Em)Home, home a(A7)gain
(Em)I like to be here when I (A7)can
The Great Gig in the Sky starts with Rick Wright going
through a long, lush sequence of chords on a piano, until it
settles on a verse with the same 2 chords again. This time, it's in
the key of Cm, so the chords are Cm -> F7, but it's the same
progression. The feeling on this one is much different from the
first two instances, which is probably why I noticed it last.
While Breathe and Time are straightforward blues rock ballads,
Great Gig is an a capella with a piano that feels operatic.
Isn't it cool how the same chords can have such a different vibe
in different contexts?
Finally, Any Colour You Like is essentially a big improv through the same i->IV7 progression, again in the key of Em. This one also feels very different from the others. It's like a funk/prog/rock mash up of synths and guitars which seems like a love letter to the 70s. Same 2 chords, different meaning.
What's so cool about this whole motif is that it gives the album a symphony like feeling. It doesn't seem like a sequence of unrelated songs, but one big piece of music that's supposed to be consumed in one go. On top of the recurring chord motif, there are sound samples that recur, like the haunting, uncomfortable laughter at the beginning of the album and in Brain Damage near the end. There are also repeated lyrical patterns that connect Breathe to Eclipse.
With the knowledge of all this, it's not hard to appreciate why Dark Side of the Moon is considered one of the greatest albums of all time, not just in its genre. It was never my favourite Pink Floyd records, that one is Wish You Were Here. But if I had to pick one which shows the band's best work, it would be Dark Side. Maybe some day, I'd be able to put into words why Wish You Were Here means more to me. Till then, it's still good to appreciate the Dark Side.
